    Synopsis

As the daughter of a Colorado County coroner, seventeen-yearold Cameryn Mahoney is no stranger to death. in fact, she’s always been fascinated by the science of it. so she’s thrilled to finally get some hands-on experience in forensics working as her father’s assistant. but Cammie is in for more than she bargained for when the second case that she attends turns out to be someone she knows—the latest victim of a serial killer known as the Christopher Killer. And if dealing with that isn’t hard enough, Cammie soon realizes that if she’s not careful, she might wind up as the killer’s next victim. . . .

    Children's Literature

Cameryn Mahoney is the daughter of a medical examiner in rural Colorado who has a fascination with homicide. An avid student of forensics, this seventeen-year-old also has a keen mind and an eye for detail. Cameryn's father decides that she would make an excellent assistant and brings her along as he investigates the deaths of others. Despite her young age, Cameryn proves her worth as she accompanies her father. When a murder potentially linked to a serial killer who leaves a St. Christopher medal on his or her victims occurs in Cameryn's hometown, she is drawn into the world of autopsies, crime scenes, and the painful nature of violent crime. This experience is doubly painful because the victim is a friend of Cameryn's. Over time, Cameryn learns a great deal about the science of investigative work as she tries to match wits with a merciless killer. Simultaneously, Cameryn also has to cope with the mystery of her birthmother's identity and why she is no longer in Cameryn's life. Written with a rapid-fire plot and featuring realistic approaches to crime scenes and forensics, this is a mystery that will keep its readers turning pages. Characters in this book are realistic, and that is particularly true of Cameryn. In the end, Alane Ferguson has produced a nuanced work of fiction that will appeal to readers with an interest in the world of CSI operatives. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
